Mitchell’s places in Lyon to visit:

I visited Lyon in summer 2025 on a wedding planning trip. Lyon is a beautiful place in the summer - here’s what I did then, and what I will be doing next time I am there:

Food

Lyon was the capital of the Gauls during the Roman Empire. A lot of Renaissance-era cooks came here and made a name for themselves, marking Lyon as the current food capital of today’s France (yes, it’s NOT Paris!)

- Le Café des Fédérations. A classic “bouchon Lyonnais” (something like a bistro). Louise’s dad and his childhood best friend took me here, talked crap about French politicians, and polished off two bottles of wine before noon. I had an amazing dish of veal liver, lentils, and cheese.

- Rue de Brest, a restaurant street. I stopped here for Chinese noodles (at Nouyeah - shoutout Inner Mongolia) but every restaurant here looked amazing. Come with no agenda, leave with a full stomach.

- Les Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse.  A very famous and large food market named after your favorite chef’s favorite chef, Paul Bocuse (who was also the inspiration for Gusteau in Ratatouille)

Wine

- It’s France. You can’t possibly go wrong.

Sightseeing

- Vieux/Old Lyon. It’s the Renaissance/medieval quarter. A lot of the architecture may feel Italian - that’s because Italian architects worked here in the capital of the Gauls during the Renaissance.

- Musée Lumière. Lyon is where the first movie ever was filmed in 1895 (watch it, it’s 30s long) and is recognized as the birthplace of cinema. Super aesthetic. This museum is located in the building where the film was shot.

- Walk along the Rhône or Saône. Lyon is where the two rivers meet, and it’s a great view from either river.

- Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste. Gotta visit all the cathedrals when in Europe. It’s been around since the 10th century, no big deal.

- Parc des Hauteurs. A really nice walk with sweeping views of Lyon and lots of shade. There is a beautiful basilica at the top built in the nineteenth century, so like brand new.

- Maison de Nicéphore Niépce. It’s a bit outside of Lyon - it’s where the first ever photograph was taken, so I will definitely be going at some point (for some unknown reason, the original photograph is in Texas...)
